Do you know why Prosciutto di Parma is the most renowned in the world? Why in Parma? Let’s discover together the story of Prosciutto di Parma.

The story of Parma Ham

In Roman times, when the area of Parma was called “Gallia Cisalpina”, its inhabitants were famous for pig farming, capable of producing a product, the cured meat, noted even then by different tasters for its fragrant, sweet, and harmonious notes on the palate.

In 1996, Prosciutto di Parma obtained PDO status, and one of its most significant qualities that distinguish it from any other product is that the only preservative used is salt, in minimal quantities, to preserve its softness and the primary aromas typical of the Val Parma region.

Indeed, Prosciutto di Parma can only be produced exclusively within a well-defined area, revolving around the village of Langhirano, precisely where the homonymous festival has been held for twenty-six years.

And if you can’t make it to the Festival…

…you can always come for a Prosciutto di Parma tasting here at Cantina Il Poggio! 😀

In fact, on the four Saturdays of September, you will not only have the opportunity to take a walk through the vineyards with our winemaker but also, during the tasting, you will be presented with one of the best Prosciutto di Parma from the entire Food Valley.

Leporati Prosciutti is the ham factory in Langhirano that we have the honor and pleasure to collaborate with throughout the month, offering their 30-month DOP Prosciutto di Parma Ouverture for tasting. Delicate, aromatic, melting in the mouth, it pairs perfectly with our bottle-fermented rosé, the Vedova Nera.

Leporati Prosciutti often appears in the most authoritative italian newspapers and has adopted measures to minimize its environmental impact since the early 2000s.

The story of a young boy, Nello Leporati, who used to go from house to house, slaughtering pigs’ farmers. In 1969, he decided to open his own company and make his dream come true. His family, in turn, continued to honor this dream.

Here at Cantina Il Poggio, we don’t just drink good wine, but we’re particularly keen on showcasing our region, collaborating with various local entities that demonstrate history, values, and contribute to a synergic and successful ecosystem.
