How to pair pizza with wine

Bottiglia di vino rosato, rifermentato in bottiglia, Vedova Nera di Cantina Il Poggio con libro "Intrepide" di Laura Donadoni.

Introduction

The wine-pizza pairing is a topic that intrigues many. Finding the perfect combination between a slice of pizza and a glass of wine can turn a casual meal into a memorable experience.

At Cantina Il Poggio, we do love to experiment, and today we want to propose to you a somewhat unusual pairing, but one that can truly surprise.

But first, let me introduce myself.

I’m Pietro, a marketing trainee for Cantina Il Poggio, and today I am going to tell you how to pair pizza with wine, and I’ve chosen our rosée, the Vedova Nera.

The Vedova Nera

The Vedova Nera is a sparkling rosé, a blend of Barbera and Merlot grapes cultivated at 380 meters above sea level. Its pink color comes from a few hours of contact between the grape skins and the juice. It’s produced without microfiltration and completes its double fermentation in the bottle, naturally. The yeast creates the classic and natural sediment in the bottle.

On the palate, it is fresh and citrusy, with a lingering taste reminiscent of small, red fruits like strawberry and raspberry.

I think it tastes like a grapefruit juice, with alcohol 😛

The presence of yeast during aging gives the wine aromas that are reminiscent of pastry, such as bread crust or blackberry tart.

Ideal for a classic, italian aperitivo.

Vedova Nera pairs well with cured meats, such as Prosciutto Crudo di Parma DOP. Its freshness, lightness, and tone make it an ideal companion for many occasions.

Surely, pizza and Netflix night could call for a fun and easy-drinking wine like our rosé sparkling wine.

But which pizza does it pair best with?

Let’s find out together!

3 best pizzas to pair with rosé

The varieties of flavors and toppings in pizza offer multiple possibilities for wine enthusiasts. Margherita Pizza, a classic, thanks to the acidity of the tomatoes, pairs perfectly with this wine.

But we can combine other flavors, such as:

  1. Pizza with mushroom: earthy texture, mushrooms demand a rosé with good structure to balance their umami flavor. Furthermore, everything is well harmonized thanks to the pronounced acidity and notes of red fruits in Vedova Nera.
  2. Vegetarian pizza: red bell peppers, zucchini, and eggplant is the right mix for this wine with fine bubbles.
  3. Pizza with Parma ham & bufala: this is the ideal pizza that we recommend for Vedova Nera, precisely because Prosciutto Crudo di Parma DOP is the perfect match for our rosé. Try it to believe it 😛

Conclusion

Thanks to the pairing of Vedova Nera with pizza, you can discover a new way to enjoy one of Italy’s most traditional dishes.
