We officially present the Poggio 2020

Il Poggio 2020, blend di Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Barbera e Bonarda, quest'ultima appassita. The winding journey of Poggio, from the vineyard to the glass, is somewhat like a man’s quest for self-discovery. From the eldest vineyard, near the lake, adorned with rows of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines from the 1970s, the grapes converge in the cellar towards the end of September.

They are carefully tended to by Luca, the director and winemaker of Cantina Il Poggio, who bears the annual responsibility of ensuring an excellent Poggio.

Poggio takes shape in a steel vat and remains there for a year; subsequently, it is transferred to the barrels area, with some aging in barriques and others in tonneaux, all made of French oak but with different toasting levels and vintages.

Each barrel, whether small or large, with medium or strong toasting, imparts its distinctive aromas to the wine, allowing the Poggio to attain the sought-after complexity and unique wisdom. After completing its journey in the barrels, the wine is once again decanted into steel tanks for a few months of stabilization.

Finally, it is bottled and left to rest on the shelves for another year, where it will develop the tertiary aromas typical of each grape variety it comprises.

However, the Poggio 2020 has something extra—not only in the wine itself but also in our hearts and memories. A vintage marked by astonishing events and significant changes, precisely when the climate and nature began reclaiming their spaces and rhythms. The grapes benefited from it, gifting us with a truly exceptional Poggio.

Yet, there’s a secret of Poggio that I haven’t revealed to you yet—the signature of the winemaker that sets it apart from other Bordeaux blends.

Therefore, it is with great pleasure that we welcome you on February 10, 2024, to the Vertical Old Vintages event here at Cantina Il Poggio, where we will officially present the Poggio 2020, alongside its predecessors!

We look forward to seeing you!
