Vendemmia 2024 a Cantina Il Poggio

Hello friends of Poggio! Today, I, Luca Gualdana, am going to talk about about 2024 harvest. I am the winemaker, agronomist, and director of Cantina Il Poggio, and in this article, I’ll tell you about the 2024 harvest in our region (so it doesn’t apply to all of Italy).

The season was marked by excessive rainfall during the spring, especially throughout May and until mid-June.

On the one hand, these rains replenished water resources (as there had been very little rain during the winter), but on the other hand, they caused concern regarding the management of fungal diseases, especially downy mildew.

Those who managed to enter the vineyards to treat them despite the mud caused by the frequent rains were able to save the harvest.

However, those who were forced to postpone interventions due to impassable conditions suffered significant damage.

These factors suggested a late start to the harvest. However, the very hot summer and the need to preserve acidity led to a starting date similar to previous years.

The key factor in September was the return of intermittent rains, which delayed the ripening process and generally resulted in sugar levels within historical averages but lower than those recorded in the last decade’s harvests.

This suggests that 2024 will not be a year for structured and full-bodied wines but more geared toward finesse and elegance. In particular, the good levels of temperature variation have created an interesting aromatic potential, which could be the added value of this harvest.

Finally, as for the quantity, there is a noticeable decline in production.
